A TRILOGY OF STORIES ABOUT COURAGE, FORTITUDE & GRIT

BREAK FROM THE HERD follows a scientist in South Dakota, a farmer in Kansas and a winemaker in Oregon. Their stories explore standing up for the integrity of scientific research, persisting against all odds to grow healthy soil, and persevering to conserve natural resources. Through first-hand accounts they share the risks taken, the trials endured and the paths forged in order to inspire better ways of improving our food and wine production systems.

THE PEOPLE

SCIENTIST - JONATHAN G. LUNDGREN

Despite preferring hands-on learning experiences to the more formalized structure of a classroom, Dr. Jonathan G. Lundgren attended the University of Illinois and earned a PhD in Entomology in 2004. He received the Presidential Early Career Award for Science and Engineering in 2010 (the highest honor granted to young scientists by the Office of the President). In 2015, he stood up to fight for the integrity of his research and put his entire career on the line.

FARMER - GAIL FULLER

It's never easy going against the grain, bucking the system or taking the road less traveled. Gail Fuller is a third generation farmer with an unparalleled sense of duty to restore the family's farmland to a diversified and healthy ecosystem. His focus is on growing healthy soil, which will in turn grow nutrient-dense food. His devotion to working with Mother Nature requires a degree of patience that is rarely found in the pace of today's world.

WINEMAKER - JOHN PAUL

John Paul's early engagement with soil involved a birthday wish, some fish heads and a cat. He went on to study plant photosynthesis in graduate school and took a postdoc position before epiphany struck! When it did, he turned to doing manual labor in a vineyard. Some thirty or more years on, John has charted a course of unflinching dedication to producing wine from his own and other dry-farmed vineyards, which has garnered a cult following, welcomed critics and admiration for his generosity and contributions to the wine industry.
